Spring 2022: Kofa National Wildlife Refuge

This was my first visit to Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.  I drove around, trying to get a feel of the area for future trips, and I also managed to neak in an off-trail hike.

This is the start of the Palm Canyon trail, one of few hiking trails in the Refuge. I decided it was not for me.

This is a rare site. Bighorn sheep find safety in steep mountains, where they have a big advantage over their predators. Here in the flats, they are at a relative disadvantage. From just 25 feet away, they don’t even know I’m nearby. That’s about to change.

The mountains here are primarily a crumbly brown color. Can you tell it’s desert here?
