I combined two treks in the Mt. Everest region of Nepal. For the purposes of this Web page, I defined the treks as:
Everest Base Camp Trek: From a place west of Lukla to Chhukhung
Three Passes Trek: From Chhukhung over the three passes (Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo Pass) to Namche Bazar and Lukla
(Truth be told, I did not actually reach Mt. Everest Base Camp due to some logistical issues, but I got within 5 miles of it. You can see Mt. Everest in the photo above.) It was quite a trip as I hope you can see below.
Preliminary Version
I am still in the process of completing the photos for this trip, but I wanted to share at least some of them with you. I hope to finish this section some time in the upcoming weeks. Last updated 11/30/2023.
The photos below show some of the scenery along the trek. Be sure to also visit the Culture page for photos that illustrate the culture of the area.
The view one morning from just outside our hotel was surprisingly impressiveAma Dablam is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. We had the pleasure of her company much of the time during this part of the trek.We all know what it’s like to be below the clouds. Many of us find it pretty cool to be above the clouds. And some of us have been in the clouds, which is foggy and so not much of a visual experience. But here, with clear skies and sun all around, we were at the level of the clouds and could see both above and below them.We all know what it’s like to be below the clouds. Approaching Cho La Glacier on the way to Cho La. Be sure to note the trekkers on the glacier.Sometimes it’s hard to know what to say. In those cases, I just bask in the scene.
This is just one of many ponds on the Khumbu GlacierThis view makes it looks a little bit like you’re on a glacierWhat a view! It was a bright day with clouds. Gokyo Lake shimmers below with Gokyo at its edge. Ngozumpa Glacier, which we crossed yesterday, lurks behind it. Mountain peaks alternately hide behind clouds or show themselves, and the highest of them all, the elusive Mt Everest, appears dead center.Looking ahead to the descent from Renjo La. There are a lot of stairs, most of which cannot be seen here.High altitude tarnThis is a wild landCan you believe there is a beach with real sand in the middle of the Himalayas? Where is a geologist when you need one?
